EMONI
Weldability In resistance welding tests the PGW EMONI materi- al showed excellent welding properties. Magnificent values could also be observed on tensile strength tests at normal material thicknesses and in combi- nation with cell housing materials. Normally, com- ponent failure occurred before a failure of a wel- ded connection. Further information such as tensile strength diagrams are available on request. System tests Two demonstrator battery systems were set up on the basis of 18,650 battery cells for a final qualification of the PGW EMONI material. One system was set up with cont- act sheets of PGW materials and one system on the basis of a diffusion-annealed material. Thus, the tests made on a laboratory scale before could be validated under simu- lated, real conditions. To this effect, the systems were exposed to typical load cycles in the Battery Abuse Centre of the Electromobility Laboratory (elabs) of the RWTH Aachen University. Thus, both the electric efficiency of the entire system and the heat generation of the live contact plates were monito- red continuously. Battery Abuse Center the RWTH Aachen University PEM Cuttability in the laser-cutting process The PGW EMONI material used has an excellent cuttability and can easily and faultlessly be cut with standard cut- ting parameters of the laser-cutting system. Electrical conductivity Tests of the electrical conductivity of the PGW EMONI ma- terial as well as the contact resistances to cell housing materials showed that EMONI had excellent properties and achieved above-average results on material level. Further tests were made on system level after a demons- trator set up (refer to the system test). Formability Dispensing with diffusion-annealing after electroplating is frequently regarded as a problem in the area of for- ming. During the forming processes required for the pro- duction of cell contact sheets however, no delaminations or other layer impairments were identified. Therefore, the formability can be evaluated as very good, in particular in relation to diffusion-annealed reference material.
